Transient Space Artist Talk: Sam Huxtable

Gain insight into the creative processes of Sam Huxtable.

Currently completing a residency titled Transient Space at PICA, Sam (he/they) is exploring the idea of thresholds, liminality, and the act of coming home to oneself in terms of their experiences as a non-binary trans person. Sam has been working mainly in digital media and installation, looking at parallels between digital space/time and queer-trans space/time.

During this online artist talk Sam will be showcasing some of his work via zoom and speaking about their process, expanding concepts and time working in the studio at PICA. Sam will be speaking with artist, writer & curator Aisyah Aaqil Sumito.

PICA is running an open Studio with Sam that is free to visit every Tuesday, Wednesday and Sunday between 12pm-2pm until the end of April. You’re invited to come by, have a chat and see what Sam has been getting up to during their time in the studio.

About Sam Huxtable

Sam Huxtable is a queer trans person living and working on unceded Whadjuk Noongar land, in Boorloo. Their practice is multidisciplinary, exploring the queer/trans body and psyche using digital media, performance, installation, and sculpture as body channel, alteration, and alternative.

Sam works in real-trans-time, unfolding and evolving as their experiences with their own body, identity, and community do. His work traverses the liminal cusp between body and mind, looking to reflect the complexities, fluidity, and joy that trans existence endures.

Sam has recently exhibited with BRAG for the Bunbury Biennale receiving an acquisitive award and held his first solo show Value Unknown at Cool Change Contemporary in late 2020. Currently, they work as a technician for ClayMake Studio.

About Aisyah Aaqil Sumito

Aisyah Aaqil Sumito is a queer and neurodivergent writer, installer and conceptual artist based on sovereign Whadjuk Noongar lands. Their prolific visual, text-based and curatorial practice draws from a desire to provide tools for marginalised artists to respond to intersecting systems of oppression, outside the tools of the institution. As well, more simply, to carve out space for queer and trans people of colour in all facets of creative engagement. They sometimes DJ, waft in other performative capacities, and were a co-director at Cool Change artist-run initiative from early 2019 until 2022. In which time they co-curated 'the hands should have no peace' for Perth Festival 2021. Since entering the Boorloo local arts industry, Aisyah has participated in a number of multidisciplinary creative projects in parks, community centres, markets, several galleries, artist run spaces and community arts organisations. Their future movements are drifting locally and across the continent as they undertake the Pari Ari (NSW) P2P Ngariung exchange and the Australia Council International Curators Program (VIC/QLD) across 2022 and 2023.

About the Youth Week WA KickstART Festival

Presented by Propel Youth Arts WA, the KickstART Festival has been the flagship event of Youth Week WA for 12 years running. KickstART offers over 60 free events - including workshops, talks, performances, mentorships, exhibitions, markets, and other special events - between 8 - 16 April, for young people aged 12-26.

Due to growing concerns about COVID-19 and the anticipated continued spread of Omicron across our communities in Boorloo (Perth) and WA, the Propel team has decided to pivot towards digital and hybrid formats for the delivery of the KickstART Festival this April.

The Youth Week WA KickstART Festival 2022 is presented by Propel Youth Arts WA and is funded by the Government of Western Australia through the Department of Communities and the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries. KickstART is also supported by Lotterywest, the City of Perth, the City of Stirling, the City of Fremantle, and the City of Vincent.
